If you’ve been to Japan, there’s a good chance you have Suica in your phone’s wallet. Starting 11:00 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, JR East is rolling out a new feature inside the Mobile Suica app: teppay, a code-based payment service.

If you open the app and see an unfamiliar new button, you might wonder whether you need to set it up. Short answer: if you’re a tourist, you can ignore it. Here’s why, based on JR East’s announcement and the official teppay FAQ.

Written on October 16, 2026, before launch, using official information available at that time.

What is teppay?

A Suica balance is capped at ¥20,000, so it can’t cover big purchases. teppay is a QR/barcode payment that gets around that cap. It lives inside the Mobile Suica app, with no separate app to install.

Your teppay balance and your Suica balance are separate, and the stores that accept each one aren’t the same.

Why tourists can skip it

teppay's three steps: open the app, SMS verification with a Japanese number, then My Number Card ID verification. Tourists with a foreign number stop at step 1 and can't top up

teppay unlocks features step by step, and each step assumes you live in Japan.

  1. Adding money requires SMS verification with a Japanese mobile number (starting with 090, 080, or 070)
  2. The only credit cards accepted for top-ups are VIEW Cards, JR East’s own Japanese cards. Foreign cards can’t be registered
  3. Bank top-ups and the ¥300,000 limit require ID verification, and only a My Number Card works. The FAQ says plainly that residence cards and passports can’t be used

So with a foreign phone number and foreign cards, you basically can’t put money into teppay.

Does Suica still work the same?

Yes. JR East says Suica’s IC money keeps working at gates and merchants exactly as before. teppay is an extra feature added on top of Suica, not a replacement for it.

What if you live in Japan as a foreign resident?

With a My Number Card, you can complete ID verification. If you only have a residence card, the features that require verification (bank top-ups, payments up to ¥300,000, and so on) aren’t available. With SMS verification on a Japanese number, you can still top up with a VIEW Card or with cash at Seven Bank or Lawson Bank ATMs (in ¥1,000 units, no fee).

Summary

  1. teppay launches October 20 as a code payment inside the Mobile Suica app
  2. Separate balance and separate stores from Suica
  3. Top-ups need Japanese-number SMS verification, cards are VIEW Card only, and ID verification is My Number Card only
  4. Tourists can keep using Suica as usual
